Mirrored Lake

“A man is whole only when he takes into account his shadow.” —Djuna Barnes

A descent down a long flight of stairs
leads to the glass lake of reflection
a mirror image
plumes of cotton-puff clouds
painted light and dark
white-papered birch
and green needled pines
completely upside down
the sun
a glimmering trail of prisms
as the paddle
cuts through the diamonds.
